An Edinburgh hotel has become the first in the UK to be powered by battery.

The Gyle Premier Inn in Edinburgh has installed a five-tonne battery which will power the 200-bedroom hotel for several hours each day.

The hotel will charge up from the national grid during cheaper-rate off-peak periods in a move which is expected to cut the hotel's energy bill by £20,000 a year, as well as reducing its environmental footprint.

The battery should power the whole building, including the restaurant, for up to three hours at a time after a two-hour charge.

Premier Inn's parent company Whitbread said the trial of the battery storage technology will help its commitment to halve its carbon emissions by 2025.
