wm leofrichotelWe are accustomed to seeing old buildings converted into hotels whether they be factories, warehouses, prisons, public buildings or theatres.

It is not often we come across a hotel which is ‘going the other way’. However that is situation at the former Leofric Hotel in the centre of Coventry.

The ballroom of this once landmark hotel is to be converted into a climbing centre. The venture is the brainchild of two brothers who are planning to convert the former ballroom space into a climbing centre which will offer a number of colour-coded climbing walls for beginners to experienced climbers.

The Leofric Hotel opened in Coventry’s cathedral quarter in April 1955. This grand, modern hotel help mark the post-war resurgence of Coventry. In those days a single room with breakfast cost 37/6d and 45/- with a bath.

Sadly, history has not been kind to the Leofric Hotel. It became a budget hotel before finally closing its doors in May 2013.
