Birmingham 11busrouteIt has provided inspiration for a dance by a Birmingham-based Scottish country dance group. It has featured in a bestselling novel.

It has provided background pictures for a calendar and it has inspired murals in the city.

What am I talking about? It is the Number Eleven bus route in Birmingham – not the just the ‘11 bus’ but the ‘Number 11’  bus.

Now the Number 11 or the ‘Outer Circle’ has been celebrated with oil paints and a specially-brewed ale.

Christopher Holloway, a self-taught Birmingham artist, has held a world premiere exhibition showing his latest transport paintings at the very Birmingham bus garage that inspired him.

He showed off three of his recently created oil paintings to the hundreds of staff who drive and look after the number 11 buses featured in these original new works.

2016 has been a momentous year for the Number 11. It has been the 90th anniversary of its inauguration and with a route covering over 27 miles, it has recently taken back (from Coventry) its title of Europe’s longest bus route.

“I hope the paintings will show the history of the route and the different nature of the locations it travels through, on the one hand it goes through the leafy suburbs of Harborne and on the other hand it’s going past Winson Green prison and through different suburbs of Birmingham, each with special characteristics of their own," Chris said.
